Visage, February 1 - 28, 2006

Many Seattleites are aware of the important cultural meeting place that Joe Bar has become over the years, not only to the Cornish College art students who attend class next door, but also to professors, musicians, and the many neighbors who find something invigorating about the venue. For its February art show, painter Cait Willis pays homage to these Capitol Hill figures in a new series of portraits entitled Visage.
Each subject depicted in this new series is a recognizeable figure of the Joe Bar community: regular customer, barista, proprieter... Willis spent time with each one choosing a landscape in which to place their likeness that best reflects who they are.
An accomplished Seattle painter who divides her time between Seattle and Prague, Willis’s work explores relationships between human figures and their surroundings, resulting in a rich series of landscapes that offer insight into the portraits painted within them.
